"Oi! Denji! Feelin' lucky that you managed to snag a baddie like that, eh?"
"Shut up, you. We just... Hit it off, that's all."
My grandparents were allowed to temporarily discharge from the hospital and my granddad began spouting nonsense again.
"Still, it's nice that you started making friends, Denjirou. It's usually pretty hard to make them during adult years, but I'm glad that you managed. Friends are important than never before during the adulthood, as it prevents you from going insane from the rambunctiousness of the world."
"Trust me, I think with her, I'll go insane way faster." I joke and we laugh.
"Still, she's rich, eh? You could use a flirty trick or two to swoon her."
"Come on, it's not that serious. Besides, it's because I'm broke that I can't be with her. Heard her parents are strict as sin."
"Not strict to prevent you two from talking, so Capre Diem. Capre Diem my son."
"My dear, Denjirou is still a timid man. Let him decide on whether or not he'll go through with the relationship. Besides, it's still better for him to focus on studying. It'll be unlike her at least."
"Oh yeah, sorry about that."
Yeah... They were talking about my mom...
My mother became a parent when she was 18 and she fell in love with a professor at her university - or at least a better way to phrase it was him falling in love with her. He was pretty young as well for a professor, but there was still a noticeable gap in ages, at least a ten year gap if I remember correctly.
That relationship ended up in scandal for both of them and they got booted from the university. That took a toll on my mother's mental health and strained her relationship with her mother - that is my grandma.
While I don't blame my grandma for being mad at my mom, there's still something rather heartbreaking about how much she ended up resenting her own daughter. While she does acknowledge that it was that bastard's fault... It still feels odd how much she hated and berated her, as if her comments would make anything better. Maybe that's why I sympathised with my mother back in the day; because even a child me was disturbed at my grandma's demeanor.
Of course, that frustration is also partially justified in how both of them leeched off of her money, but... It feels wrong to simply hate your own child like that.
"Denji's silent again."
"Ah, I apologise, Denjirou. What was I trying to say is that you should prioritise both your happiness and your stability. Don't make any rash decisions that you might regret, okay?"
"... Okay."
I finish my food in silence.
