It's April 8th; a proper start of the second year of highschool. Shinji Terano is an ordinary highschooler with no aspirations in life... Or so it seems. Last year he stumbled across the lucid dreaming phenomena through browsing on the internet - and became interested in it. He trained rigorously by documenting his dreams, in hopes of achieving his elusive lucid dream experience; and one day - he did. The rest they say is history...
KYO-Mukai is a fanmade "urban fantasy"-like reimagining of the original Mukai Porject created by Retrograde Road (link to the game is here (PC only)); written and illustrated by ALePH_D. KYO-Mukai, unlike its predecessor - is much more darker, somber and grounded in its tone (as grounded as urban fantasy can be anyway): focusing on possible dangers of losing oneself to the make-believe fantasy, with main lead given a rather dark motivation for desire of escapism. It's not all broody though, as Shinji finds himself connecting not only with people in dream world, but also from real world - who keep him grounded in reality, in spite of his pursuit for fantasy.
The namesake comes from "Through the Looking-Glass" of Alice's Books authored by Lewis Carol. If the original dream world is more akin to a Wonderland, then this world will be encased within the Looking-Glass. May or may not be also inspired by Devil's Mirror of "The Snow Queen" by Hans Christian Andersen
Keep in mind that this work only reimagines the original work and doesn't present itself as a superior product to the original - as both reimagining and original go for completely different tones and mediums (reimagining - dark, short story/mock STG scenario; original - light, STG game). Additionally, starting from "KYO-Mukai Samayou ([鏡]夢界差迷陽) ~ Golden Moon and Silver Sun" - all new characters and scenarios coming forward ARE PURELY ORIGINAL stemming from the author's mind way before the original's creator, as such any similarities are PURELY COINCIDENTAL - author did not intend on predicting or ripping off the original work at all; with that entry marking a significant point of divergence
Due to nature of the work, that being a more somber tale regarding escapism, it will touch upon sensitive subjects. As such, please familiarize with Content/Trigger Warnings before engaging with the work to see if it's suited for you. The recommended rating is +17 for readers.
