冬奇妙夢玄 (Winter Bizarre Dream Mystery) ~ Shoulder and a Heel
Chapter 3

It was a long time ago. Back when I used to be happy.

I was born as the only child. My parents had issues with having children - and despite their best efforts, they couldn't give birth to more after me.

My parents were busy with their work, so I was primarily raised by my grandmas.

One was from my father's side. She was actually hailing from Europe and had blue eyes like me, and also blonde hair. She would spoil me a bunch, reading various fairytales as I clang onto her. She was a very tolerant and kind person, a very doting grandma - with some clumsiness in her stride; as she would end up burning some of the food all the time. Still she gave me only the best pieces. She is the Lady in White.

The other was from my mother's side and she was more strict, but nonetheless loving. She taught me how to be more like a proper lady and despite her insistence otherwise, she would buy lots of toys. She had some sort of friendly rivalry with my other grandma on who could raise me better. And, in spite of her health, did try to keep up with the world surrounding her despite her more oriental approach. She is the Lady in Red.

They loved me very much, they were essentially my guardians. Looking at the photos of their youth made me feel astonished as a child due to how beautiful they were even in sepia and monochrome. I wished to cherish them forever.

However something... Happened.

It was my ninth birthday, my grandma (Lady in White) was supposed to show up for it like she always did but... She didn't. I could tell that my parents were utterly distressed, but tried to hide it from me. And then I saw the news.

I couldn't understand at the time what was being said there, but the imagery was horrifying. People in hazmat suits carrying bodies on a stretchers and they were charred and bloody. Some were old, some were young...

And before I saw any further...

"Yukino!!!"

My dad grabbed a TV remote and turned it off.

"You're too young to be watching these."

That news coverage was ingrained in my head for the longest time. It gave me lots of nightmares of hearing dronning music with names of victims scrolling by.

At night, the stars were blue.

And just when nightmares finally subsided.

"!!!"

Lady in Red passed away too some time later. Her health failed her and that's when I realized I was now all alone. The parents have now grown colder and colder.

The only thing remaining are the fairytales they left behind.

That's when my hollowness began.
